Drones forbidden in competition venues of 2nd European Games Minsk 2019

Flying drones are forbidden in sport venues and near hotels for the duration of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019, BelTA has learned.

On 20 May Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed decree No.191 “On security measures during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019”. The document was published on the dedicated legal information website law.by. In line with the document additional security measures will be enforced in Minsk and the district from 17 June through 2 July.

The presidential decree forbids using unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft models in sport venues and other places where the competitions are supposed to take place. Drones are also forbidden in fan zones and near hotels and other places meant to accommodate guests and participants of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. Drones used by government agencies and drones officially used in the course of the games are an exception.

Temporary traffic restrictions will be enforced in Minsk if and when necessary. Special traffic lanes will be allocated by constructive means or by painting European Games symbols on them. They will be used for stopping, parking, and moving vehicles used as part of the games.

Fire inspectors and officials of the Safe Industrial Practices Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gospromnadzor) will be able to carry out unscheduled inspections and checks of sport venues, the places accommodating participants of the games, and in fan zones in exceptional cases. The inspections will have to be authorized by the emergencies minister.

Security officers in hotels and similar hospitality businesses meant to accommodate participants of the games will be able to perform body search, search personal belongings and vehicles, check documents.

The decree's implementation is supposed to enhance the security of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. The presidential decree comes into force as of the official publication date.

The 2nd European Games will take place in Minsk on 21-30 June 2019. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 200 medal events in 15 sports.

Belarus was granted the right to host the 2nd European Games after delegates from 50 countries cast their votes during the 45th meeting of the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees on 21 October 2016.
