Census results in Minsk Oblast

The Main Statistical Department of Minsk Oblast has published a statistical bulletin with the results of the 2019 population census, which tells about the demographic characteristics of the population of the central region.

Let's start with the most revealing figure. So, for 10 years since the previous census, the population of the region has grown by almost 50 thousand people and is 1 million 471.2 thousand people. Of these, 687.8 thousand are men and 783.4 thousand are women.

At the same time, population growth is noted only in six districts and the city of Zhodino. In the overwhelming majority of regions, its decline is observed.

As for the distribution of the population by place of residence, the Minsk region remains the most “rural” in the country. So, according to the census, 661 thousand people live in the villages. About 810 thousand people live in urban conditions. In other regions of the country, the number of townspeople clearly exceeds the number of villagers.

A few figures about the level of education of the inhabitants of the Minsk region. This statistic only includes citizens over 10 years old. 257.9 thousand citizens in this sample have higher education. Only 1,645 people can boast of postgraduate education. Most of the representatives with general secondary education - 339.1 thousand people; 135.6 thousand citizens received a diploma of vocational education. Slightly more than 339 thousand have specialized secondary education. 81 thousand people have general basic education, and 93 thousand have primary education.

As for the national composition of the population, one can note a clear tendency towards the assimilation of other peoples in our country. In general, the number of representatives of the titular nation increased by 44 thousand people (1 million 302 thousand people in 2019 versus 1 million 258 thousand in 2009). The number of Russians decreased by 15 thousand (now there are about 86 thousand people). But the number of Ukrainians has grown significantly - from 17.7 to 21.2 thousand people. The number of representatives of Polish nationality has decreased by 2.2 thousand over 10 years and according to the results of the census is 15.7 thousand people.

As for the native language, the situation is as follows: 66.2% of Belarusians consider Belarusian as their native language (10.5% less than in 2009). Among Russians, Belarusian is considered native by 2.2% (97.7% - Russian). For Poles, the native language is mainly Belarusian (65.1%), Russian (29%) and Polish (5%). As for Ukrainians, 28.8% are native Ukrainian, 68.7% Russian, and only 2% Belarusian. In general, 876.1 thousand people called the Belarusian native. Russian language - 548.3 thousand.

It was also found that in everyday life (at home) 549.6 thousand people speak Belarusian and 884.6 thousand in Russian.
