Belarus counts on continued tight cooperation with World Bank

Belarus expects that tight cooperation with the World Bank will continue. Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Rumas made the statement as he met with World Bank representatives on 2 October, BelTA has learned.

The prime minister said: “I am happy to mention the high level of cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the World Bank. The figures are self-explanatory: the total portfolio of projects on record is estimated at over $1.7 billion, including $800 million worth of projects, which are being implemented. The renewed Belarusian government is intent on only advancing and enhancing the level of cooperation we have now. The government is working on a renewed action program. It is very important for us to maintain the economic growth, to make it steady and dynamic. We expect that the economic growth rate will be accelerated this year. Next year it should be above the world's average. It is very important for us to use this time to realize the available potential. We count on tight cooperation with the World Bank not only via consultations but also via the bank's financial support for economic reforms.”

A lot of attention is paid to the development of the private sector in Belarus. “We are glad that the World Bank also supports these initiatives,” noted the prime minister. “The housing and utilities sector is also important for the country. We are grateful to you for a number of ongoing housing and utilities sector projects. We now enjoy trustful relations. The government would like to count on the World Bank as a reliable partner in the future, too.”

In turn, World Bank Country Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Satu Kahkonen said: “The World Bank has worked together with Belarus for a long time. We intend to continue this tight and trustful interaction.”
