Belarus intent on dealing with food export problems ahead of import restrictions

Belarus is intent on dealing with problems of exporting agricultural products to Russia in a timely manner to forestall import restrictions. Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Dvornik made the statement on the sidelines of the international expo Belagro 2019 on 4 June, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “The temporary restrictions introduced by [the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance of Russia] Rosselkhoznadzor are not systemic. They are unable to affect the development of the country's agricultural potential. If any problems emerge, we try to settle all the issues and smooth relations to mutual consent.” He stressed that the Belarusian side is intent on discussing problems with the Russian side and taking measures in a timely manner in order to avoid import restrictions. “I believe we will come to an understanding that will allow us to work as normal, as partners and export agricultural products in line with the roadmap,” he stated.

Vladimir Dvornik also touched upon export diversification. “We try to satisfy our market as much as possible and export the spare agricultural products. Export rises every year and this year is no exception. Certainly, we have to expand the area of export, this is why today we try to work not only with traditional countries but also penetrate new markets. We supply our agricultural products to over 80 countries,” the official remarked.
