Nuclear power plant to ensure Belarus' energy security

The construction of the nuclear power plant of its own will take care of Belarus' energy security, BelTA learned from Stefan Kosovan, Director of the Slovak power engineering company STM Power, after he visited the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

Stefan Kosovan said: “The construction of a nuclear power plant is a strategic decision for the long term, for 100 years into the future. It is a decision meant to benefit the nation. It will ensure the country's energy security. Slovakia has four nuclear power-generating units and we support your decision to develop nuclear power industry.”

Speaking about the safety of the design used to build the nuclear power plant near Ostrovets, the executive said that Slovakia also operates VVER-type reactors. “It is a very safe design. It can be called a world class design,” believes Stefan Kosovan.

During the visit to the Belarusian nuclear power plant representatives of the Slovak company went to the nuclear power plant information center in Ostrovets, were made familiar with progress in building the first power-generating unit of the nuclear power plant and with the system used to train personnel in the nuclear power plant's training and education center.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW).
