The 3rd conference of the Covenant of Mayors in Belarus will take place on April 25-26 in Polotsk, BelTA learned from organizers.
The main issues for discussion will be financial mechanisms that can be used by cities - parties to the Covenant of Mayors. Opportunities for obtaining additional funding arise from the fact that after joining the city’s initiative, they are developing action plans for sustainable energy and climate that are aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. Plans may include activities in various areas of urban services, from transportation to building insulation.
"The conference will focus on improving energy efficiency in multi-family housing, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from waste management, climate change adaptation and urban green infrastructure. It will also present innovative experiences of climate change mitigation and local adaptation in Belarus and Europe, "the organizers said.
The program includes not only presentations and panel discussions, but also visits to energy efficiency demonstration sites and historical sites.
The conference is held under the project "Support the initiative" Agreement of Mayors "in Belarus", which is funded by the European Union. Currently, 45 Belarusian and over 8.8 thousand cities in other European countries have joined the initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Polotsk was the first to sign an agreement in Belarus.
The event was organized by the Polotsk district executive committee, the Department of Energy Efficiency of the State Committee for Standardization and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the IPO Ecopartnership, the Interaction Foundation and the GEFPR UN Green Cities.
